Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Wildflowers & Wildlife
While You Are In Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Country You Will Be In Wildflower & Wildlife Country.
Wildflowers
Nature paints the high country along the C&TSRR route with an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors as each portion develops through its annual growth cycle. The stately evergreens of pine and spruce stand unchanged in color – until Spring brings the lighter candles of new growth sprouting on the tips.
The grass turns green early in the year. The vast expanses of the aspen groves slowly shed their grey tint of winter for the light green of new leaves as the weather warms in the high country.
But the most stunning are the wildflowers of the valleys and high meadows. Germinating even now as the weather warms and the snow retreats, the eruption of color will be at its height toward the end of June and the first half of July.
Nature along the route of the C&TSRR presents a year-long show with a succession of scenes to delight the eye.
Wildlife
If you enjoy seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, you will love C&TSRR country. What you see on a given trip depends on the vagaries of the birds and animals. But, you can get a complete preview of the possibilities by watching our slide show, which features more than 50 species of wildlife. All were photographed In the Chama & Antonito Valleys and along the route of the railroad. The slide show will give you a preview of what to watch for when you bring your camera on your C&TSRR journey to adventure.
